Construction and Engineering

CHALLENGE

BAM Infra undertakes engineering projects of up to more than EUR 300 million. At the same time, there is growing pressure to build faster, more sustainably and smarter. This complexity requires clear visibility into schedules, resource capacity, and collaboration.

RESULT

With the support of Primaned, BAM Infra started a phased implementation of Oracle Primavera Cloud. A solid foundation was first laid: user profiles, rights structure, calendars and projects & program layout. Thanks to this preparation, projects were migrated from Primavera P6 to Oracle Primavera Cloud in a structured and controlled manner, supported by Primaned consultants.

About BAM Infra

BAM Infra is part of Royal BAM Group and delivers high quality, sustainable solutions in advising, designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure and industrial projects. Through an integrated and sustainability driven approach, BAM develops solutions for mobility, climate adaptation, and the energy transition. By engaging early in projects, combining disciplines, and leveraging digital tools such as Oracle Primavera Cloud, BAM is not just building infrastructure, but contributing to a more resilient and future ready Netherlands.

Part I

The challenge

BAM Infra delivers projects with a high level of technical and organisational complexity. At the same time, the pressure to deliver faster, more sustainably, and more intelligently continues to increase. This complexity requires clear insight into schedules, capacity, and collaboration.

BAM Infra has been using Primavera as its scheduling tool since the early 2000s. In 2012, the organisation transitioned from P3 to P6, followed by a P6 SaaS environment with a central database. Alongside the evolution of the platform in terms of state of the art digital infrastructure through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and security, a growing need emerged within BAM for:

  • a single, central scheduling environment instead of fragmented project schedules

  • stronger integration between contract schedules and detailed schedules

  • broader user adoption across disciplines

  • visibility into capacity across projects

  • alignment with wider digital initiatives such as Power BI, the BAM Data Lake, and BIM, including 4D planning

With the ambition to position Oracle Primavera as the standard scheduling tool within BAM Infra, Oracle Primavera Cloud (OPC) was selected as the platform to take the next step in digitalisation. This transition was not just about software. It was about establishing a scalable, standardised way of working across all projects and departments.

Michiel Janssens, Integrated Project Planner at BAM Infra: “We wanted to move away from fragmentation. Instead of everyone working with their own schedules and reports, we aimed to work from one central environment, using reusable templates and standardised formats.”

Part II

The solution

With support from Primaned, BAM Infra initiated a phased implementation of Oracle Primavera Cloud. The first step focused on establishing a solid foundation, including user profiles, a roles and permissions framework, calendars, and a structured project and programme setup. The transition was deliberately phased and aligned with project schedules and team availability.  With this foundation in place, projects were migrated from Primavera P6 to Oracle Primavera Cloud in a structured and controlled way, supported by Primaned consultants.

In parallel, planners were trained through the Primaned Academy. Functional administrators and a risk management specialist also completed targeted training programmes, ensuring that knowledge, system ownership, and further development remained embedded within the organisation. This approach enabled smooth onboarding and continuity.

“The added value of this approach is that you do not have to reinvent the wheel. The foundation is solid, allowing you to immediately move forward with your projects.” - Michiel Janssens, Senior project planning specialist, BAM Infra -

The collaboration with Primaned extended beyond system configuration. Consultants actively contributed to standardisation, a scalable structure, and future BI applications. This joint approach ensured that no fundamental design decisions needed to be revisited later.

“The transition went surprisingly smoothly. No technical issues, no disruptions. That is rare for a change of this scale,” Michiel explains. The migration was executed per project, with data carefully transferred and validated.

The initial implementation focused on the Schedule module. Risk management and resource planning are being explored as next steps towards integrated project controls. At the same time, BAM is advancing innovative next steps. In a pilot project, scheduling data from OPC is connected to Power BI to enable real time dashboards and reporting  capabilities. Integration with the internal BAM Data Lake is also in progress. The exchange of scheduling data with Synchro for 4D planning remains as seamless as before. In this way, BAM is building a data driven and future ready Project Controls environment as part of its Digital Construction approach.

Part III

The result

Following the phase out of Oracle Primavera P6, Oracle Primavera Cloud has become the preferred platform for all major projects within BAM Infra Civil, and is also deployed across other BAM Infra Netherlands business units where relevant.

Within approximately three months, around 15 active projects, representing roughly 150 schedules and baselines, were successfully migrated to OPC. Each project migration took only a few hours, with full data integrity maintained.

Thanks to targeted training and close collaboration with consultants, OPC adoption progressed without significant issues. Around 30 colleagues are now actively working in the environment, with knowledge shared internally and new users onboarded as needed.

“The OPC environment enforces a structured way of working. That is exactly what you need when managing large, multidisciplinary projects under pressure.” - Michiel Janssens, Senior project planning specialist, BAM Infra -

Although BAM is still in the early stages of full rollout, the strategic value is already clear: Capacity data from active projects is consolidated into a single overview, enabling department heads to better manage peaks, troughs, and future resource allocation.

OPC provides the foundation for further centralisation and standardisation of scheduling, with broader adoption and stronger alignment with digital initiatives. It also supports BAM in connecting scheduling data, processes, and disciplines, both within and across projects.

“With OPC, we are taking a step towards standardisation and integration, where scheduling and risk analysis come together more effectively and can be applied more broadly across the organisation.” - Michiel Janssens, Senior project planning specialist, BAM Infra -
